Director’s Address, Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra

Program Book, Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra (2026)

It is my greatest reward each summer to see and hear the Fellows surpass themselves and their excellent music school training. We aim for them to leave as different artists from when they arrive.

Interview with Brian McCreath

Classical Radio Boston (2025)

One of the things we've tried to do is [ensure that] every performance, every assignment given out to a young musician, is something that they take with them for the rest of their career.

About Michael Tree

The American Viola Society (2018)

I studied with Michael Tree at Curtis in the early eighties and I remember taking a taxi with him in New York City once.  He strode out into the middle of Madison Avenue in a swirl of oncoming traffic and flagged down a cab. The car stopped immediately and Tree flashed an impish grin.  “I think I got his attention!” he said.

Interview with former student Esther Nahm

“Shake that bye bye flab” (2017)

The whole point of teaching at a place like IU is that you teach different levels. I have freshmen who are 18 years old to artist diploma and doctoral students in their late 20’s and early 30’s, with everything in between. I want to see them achieve some step, some realization or epiphany, no matter however small, at each lesson.

Wellness Profile

Interview with Maya Jacobs

I’m constantly inspired by my students and the gratification of seeing them improve on the viola and grow as musicians.  I look for at least one moment of “spark” or epiphany in each lesson.  When I see it, even if it’s a very small spark, I’m inspired to go on. I’m also continually inspired by my own great teachers and many of the outstanding musicians I’ve encountered in my career of almost four decades.
